Synopsis: In Newbery Medalist Cleary's seventh book about the Quimbys, eight-year-old Ramona and the whole family are caught up in momentous events. Beezus and Ramona share sorrows and help each other instead of tiffing when their dear cat dies. They worry about the consequences if their aunt marries a man they're not sure they like, about Mr. Quimby's new job taking them to a distant town. Most of all, Ramona wonders about her status when Mrs. Quimby has a new baby. (from amazon.com)

Discussion topics for before reading:
•  Has anyone read another "Ramona" book before? If so, which one?
•  What do you think the book will be about, based on the cover picture?
•  Do you have any aunts and/or uncles?
•  Do any of your relatives live far away, maybe in another country?
•  Did you ever get a gift that you had to "grow" into and couldn't play with until you were older?

Discussion topics for during/after reading:
•  How do you think Uncle Hobart became rich?
•  What gifts do you think Uncle Hobart will bring?
•  Uncle Hobart brought an accordion for Willa Jean. Have you ever played a musical instrument?
•  Why does Mr. Kemp not like Ramona?
•  Do you think Ramon will return to Mrs. Kemp's house the next day?

Craft ideas:
•  Draw a musical instrument that you have played before or one that you want to learn to play.
•  Make an accordion, like Willa Jean's, out of construction paper.

*Note: These craft ideas are just suggestions. You can use them, but you don’t have to use them. You can expand upon them, or add your own twist. Remember, though, that the focus of your time should not be on the development and execution of a craft; the focus should be on the read-aloud and the enjoyment of the book!
