Synopsis: Pangopup is convinced he is old enough to leave his burrow and see the world. When his mother disagrees, the naughty pup waits for her to fall asleep and sneaks away. Outside, he meets a mischievous DIK DIK who is eager to show him some fun. However, DIK DIK's idea of fun isn't necessarily PANGOLIN proof and Pangopup finds himself in more and more danger as their explorations of the African landscape take them further from his burrow.

Note to readers:
•  a Pangolin is a mammal —similar to a scaly anteater
•  Pangolins live in China and Vietnam—they are sometimes eaten as a delicacy and cost the equivalent of $150.00. They are in danger of extinction as a result of the pet trade.

Discussion topics for before reading:
•  Look at the picture - do you think a pangolin is a real animal or pretend?
•  Does Pangopup look soft and cuddly or scratchy—who would give Pangopup a hug?

Vocabulary

•  Burrow—it's a tunnel an animal make in the ground for their home
•  Noxious—it is a stinky smell—
•  Whacked—hitting something
•  Fright ——really scary

Discussion topics for during/after reading:
•  What did Pangopup get soooo angry about with his mom's rules?
•  Do you think Pangopup had a TANTRUM when he whacked his tail in the burrow?
•  I have had tantrums —any body here every had a tantrum?
•  Why was Pangopup so shocked when he snuck out the burrow—remember the bright sun—it is because they sleep during day and go out night

Craft ideas:
•  Let's draw. We can go step by step (see diagram) and make a pangolin
•  How about drawing a picture of what you would want to do on an adventure-get an ice cream, go to the beach….
•  Draw a picture of an adult saying NO to a young person
