Synopsis:
Never underestimate the power of the bean.

Tucker MacBean has been drawing comic books almost as long as he’s been reading them. When his favorite comic has a contest for kids, he hopes he has finally found a way to fix his family—all he has to do is create the winning superhero sidekick... Introducing "Beanboy"—the first comic book character to truly harness the power of the bean for good. He is strong, he is relentless, he can double in size overnight (if given enough water).

With thoughtful characterizations and copious comic book illustrations, this laugh-out-loud novel will have readers rooting for a superhero with true heart.

Discussion topics for before reading:
•  If you were a superhero, what would your superpower be?
•  What does a superhero do? (Have the kids give examples)
•  If you were a superhero, how could your friends help you?

Vocabulary:
•  synchronized-to make happen at the same time
•  submerged-covered with water
•  cataclysm-something that causes great destruction;
•  bassoon: a large, woodwind musical instrument that is shaped like a tube, makes low sounds, and is played by blowing into a small, thin tube in its side
•  scholarship: money given (as by a college) to a student to help pay for further education
•  institutional: established organization or corporation and especially one of a public nature
•  nemesis-someone that causes you major problems;

Discussion topics for during/after reading:
•  Why did Tucker want to win the comic book competition?
•  Why is Tucker's superhero named "Beanboy"?
•  Have you ever taken care of someone else? (younger brother or sister; grandparent; sick person)
•  How do you feel after you have helped someone?
•  Who do you look up to? Who is your hero?

Craft ideas:
•  Create your own comic strip! Use one of the following templates:

OR

•  Make an award ribbon out of construction paper: Cut out a circle and write your superhero name on it. Cut out the "ribbon" for the medal and glue it to the circle. Glue a clothespin or a ribbon onto the back of the circle and attach it to your chest or wear around your neck.
•  Make a Valentines card for the hero in your life.

*Note: These craft ideas are just suggestions. You can use them, but you don't have to use them. You can expand upon them, or add your own twist. Remember, though, that the focus of your time should not be on the development and execution of a craft; the focus should be on the read-aloud and the enjoyment of the book!
