Discussion topics for before reading:
•  Do you have a nickname? Who calls you that and why?
•  Have you ever tried to do something that was hard for you? What was it and who helped you?

Discussion topics for during/after reading:
•  Why couldn?t the youngest duckling move on?
•  Which duckling helped the youngest duckling? What advice did that duckling give?
•  Why did that advice work?
•  Where did the ducklings travel to reach their mama?

Craft ideas:
•  Make a pond for Little One Step. Rip up blue paper and glue the pieces on each other like a collage. Rip up some green paper and line the edges of the paper to show the water?s edge. Add a cotton duckling in the middle.

*Note: These craft ideas are just suggestions. You can use them, but you don't have to use them. You can expand upon them, or add your own twist. Remember, though, that the focus of your time should not be on the development and execution of a craft; the focus should be on the read-aloud and the enjoyment of the book!
