Synopsis: Discover Benedict drinking hot chocolate in Paris, France; Mitko chasing the school bus in Sofia, Bulgaria; and Khanh having a little nap in Hanoi, Vietnam! Clotilde Perrin takes readers eastward from the Greenwich meridian, from day to night, with each page portraying one of (the original) 24 time zones. Strong back matter empowers readers to learn about the history of timekeeping and time zones, and to explore where each of the characters lives on the world map. A distinctive educational tool, this picture book's warm, unique illustrations also make it a joy to read aloud and admire.

Note to readers:
•  Each page features a person(s) doing something. While reading, find the person(s) in each city the author is talking about. Read the end of the book before the reading clubs so you can explain time zones and how we keep time now. There is a pull out map of all the places from the book. If you can, display the map and find the location while you are reading.

Discussion topics for before reading:
•  Looking at the cover, what is different about the top and bottom?
•  Have you traveled outside California or outside of the United States?
•  When you travel to another state or country, is it the same time? the same weather?
•  What do you think young boys and girls in Hawaii are doing right now? (it is 2 hours behind PST)

Vocabulary

•  construct - to build
•  nearby - close
•  towering - rising above
•  enjoy - to find joy in, to like

Discussion topics for during/after reading:
•  What places described in the book would you like to visit? Why?
•  Do you know anyone who lives in a different time zone? (lives in another country)
•  Why is it daytime in one part of the world and night time in other parts? (because the earth spins and rotates around the sun. It takes Earth 1 year to rotate around the sun and 24 hours to spin completely around itself.)

Craft ideas:
•  Make a display of clocks for various time zones in a map of the world. (use the pull out map for guidance)
•  Draw a picture of yourself in one of the cities in the book. On the other side, draw yourself in another city across the world doing something different. Put what time it is on the top!
•  Make a Father's Day card. (for father, uncle, grandfather, someone who is like a father to you.)

*Note: These craft ideas are just suggestions. You can use them, but you don't have to use them. You can expand upon them, or add your own twist. Remember, though, that the focus of your time should not be on the development and execution of a craft; the focus should be on the read-aloud and the enjoyment of the book!
