Synopsis: Narwhal is a happy-go-lucky narwhal. Jelly is a no-nonsense jellyfish. The two might not have a lot in common, but they do they love waffles, parties and adventures. Join Narwhal and Jelly as they discover the whole wide ocean together. A wonderfully silly early graphic novel series featuring three stories. In the first, Jelly learns that Narwhal is a really good friend. Then Narwhal and Jelly form their own pod of awesomeness with their ocean friends. And finally, Narwhal and Jelly read the best book ever -- even though it doesn't have any words...or pictures! Ben Clanton showcases the joys of friendship, the benefits of working together and the power of imagination in the delightful Narwhal: Unicorn of the Sea.

Discussion topics for before reading:
•  Does anyone know what a Narwhal is? Do you think they're real? (They are!)
•  Has anyone ever seen a jellyfish or been stung by one?
•  What other animal has a horn? Can you think of any?
•  Would you want to see a Narwhal in real life if you could?

Vocabulary

•  Pod- A small heard or school, especially of seals or whales
•  Blowfish- A fist capable of inflating its body with water or air
•  Narwhal- A small arctic whale. The male have long twisted ivory tusks
•  Imagination- The act or power of the mind to form a though, picture, or image
•  Jellyfish- A water animal with a soft body shaped like a bell. Jellyfish have many tentacles hanging down from their bodies. Most live in the ocean.

Discussion topics for during/after reading:
•  What do you love about Narwhal the character?
•  Can any of you remember how long a narwhal can hold its breath? (answer: 25 minutes)
•  How long can narwhals live?
•  [Flip to the empty pages of the book] If you could imagine something in these pages, what would you imagine?

Craft ideas:
•  Make a hanging ocean with a paper plate (or construction paper), markers & googly eyes, and string to hang.
•  Make a narwhal out of a toilet paper roll or construction paper
•  Make a jellyfish out of 1/2 paper plate or construction paper and ribbon/fabric/tissue paper for the tentacles

Special activities:
•  Sing the narwhal song! [Note- the song from the book. DO NOT USE THE SONG FROM YOUTUBE (it's not kid friendly!)]
•  Fill a jar with blank piecies of paper and some with ocean creatures. Ask kid to pick a paper from the jar and say out loud what they see. If it is blank- what can they imagine? A sea creature? a pancake? a boat?

*Note: These craft ideas are just suggestions. You can use them, but you don't have to use them. You can expand upon them, or add your own twist. Remember, though, that the focus of your time should not be on the development and execution of a craft; the focus should be on the read-aloud and the enjoyment of the book!
