Synopsis: From dazzling blue lapis lazuli to volcanic snowflake obsidian, an incredible variety of rocks are showcased in all their splendor. Poetic in voice and elegant in design, this book introduces an array of facts, making it equally perfect for classroom sharing and family reading.

Note to readers:
•  There may be unfamiliar terms, but the book does a good job providing explanations. You may want to have the students repeat the names of the rocks (especially the unfamiliar ones) after you read each one.

Discussion topics for before reading:
•  What do you think rocks are made of?
•  Do you have a favorite type of rock or stone?

Vocabulary:
•  molten - made liquid from intense heat; melted
•  magma - (Geology) The molten rock material under the earth's crust, from which igneous rock is formed by cooling.

Discussion topics for during/after reading:
•  How old is the oldest rock on earth?
•  Which rocks do you think are the most interesting? The most colorful? The strangest? The prettiest?
•  What interesting facts about rocks did you learn from this book?
•  How do you use rocks in your everyday life?

Craft ideas:
•  Cut out colorful paper like the rocks on the last page & label each one.
•  Make a rock bracelet or necklace using colorful pieces of paper for the stones. Fold the paper over ribbon or yarn.

*Note: These craft ideas are just suggestions. You can use them, but you don't have to use them. You can expand upon them, or add your own twist. Remember, though, that the focus of your time should not be on the development and execution of a craft; the focus should be on the read-aloud and the enjoyment of the book!
