Synopsis: When careless citizens pose a threat to Bear Country's environment, Brother and Sister Bear form the Earthsavers Club. Their spirited ecological efforts deliver a timely message about the urgent need to mend our polluting and wasteful ways.

Tips for reading the book: This book focuses on the idea that everyone is personally responsible for doing their part to save the environment.  Since this book is a rather lengthy you may not want to do a picture walk before you begin.  Make sure to pace yourself.

Discussion topics:

• What do the "3 R's" mean ­ reduce, reuse, recycle? How do these actions help the earth?
• What do Ecology and Conservation mean?
• Have you ever seen pollution? Where? What can you do to stop pollution?
• Can adults learn from children? When have you seen that happen?

Craft ideas:

• Make an "Earthsavers Club" membership card. Discuss what it means to be an Earthsaver, and write three actions on the back of the card that members can do to help preserve the earth.
• Design or make a recycling container for your own home, and decorate.
• Fold a piece of paper into 3 pieces, write "ecology," "conservation," and "recycle" on the top, and draw examples of each underneath.

Remember, though, that the focus of your time should not be on the development and execution of a craft; the focus should be on the read-aloud and the enjoyment of the book!
